Angular contact thrust ball bearings

Single direction angular contact ball bearings are able to take up axial loads acting in one direction. They are of separable design, i.e. the washers and ball and cage assembly can be mounted individually. In the main application area for these bearings – rotary tables – two bearings are always adjusted against each other.

Product Description

Product Description

The NEWORLD angular contact thrust ball bearings shown here were originally designed to support the rotary tables of drilling rigs but are also suitable for other applications where high load carrying capacity, high axial stiffness and low friction torque are important. In contrast to conventional thrust ball bearings, angular contact thrust ball bearings can accommodate radial loads in addition to axial loads and are able to operate at high speeds.

BEARING DESIGN

Designs and variants

Single direction angular contact thrust ball bearings

Single direction angular contact thrust ball bearings (fig. 1) are designed to accommodate axial loads in one direction only and therefore are adjusted against a second bearing or mounted as sets. In their main application area of rotary tables, two bearings are always used and adjusted against each other.

Double direction angular contact thrust ball bearings

Double direction angular contact thrust ball bearings consist of one housing washer, two shaft washers and two different-size ball and cage assemblies (fig. 2). The larger bearing half has a higher load carrying capacity. Double direction angular contact thrust ball bearings have a low height and can accommodate axial loads in both directions as well as moment loads. A single bearing can therefore be used to support rotating machine components relative to stationary components.

CAGES

Cages

NEWORLD angular contact thrust ball bearings, if not full complement of balls, are fitted with a window-type machined brass cage (fig. 3), either shaft or housing washer centred.

Double direction bearings are equipped with two different-size cages.

Temperature limits

Where temperatures outside the permissible range are expected, contact SKF.

The permissible operating temperature for angular contact thrust ball bearings can be limited by:

 ●  the dimensional stability of the bearing washers and balls

 ●  the cage(s)

 ●  the lubricant

Bearing washers and balls

NEWORLD angular contact thrust ball bearings are heat stabilized up to at least 150 °C (300 °F).

Cages

Brass cages can be used at the same operating temperatures as the bearing washers and balls.
